As one of the country’s leading children’s hospitals, Children’s Health has the unique ability to provide Day Treatment services to children who need medical interventions or monitoring for serious, but stable, health conditions. With your consent, we can coordinate with your child’s medical team to ensure they are aware of the mental health care your child is receiving. Psychiatry, as a medical discipline, has a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations. Characterizations from some grass-roots efforts define recovery not as a cure, but as a process and an attitude, a stance, a way of approaching the day’s challenges. Recovery is one of development and change, accepting adverse impacts, having a sense of involvement and control over one’s life, cultivating hope, and using supports. Mr. Z was a 67-year-old, single, Caucasian man with schizophrenia (paranoid type, chronic) diagnosed at age 19. Mr. Z lived in a supervised residence (for 10 years) before he lived in a more independent living situation. STAR is not a school, but we do provide one hour of homebound instruction. STAR CDT teachers will be in contact with each patient’s school to determine specific educational and emotional needs. Reintegration to home, school, and community with an enhanced ability to manage personal lives. The program welcomes referrals from social service agencies, clergy, school systems, insurance companies, court systems, probation/parole agents, independent counselors, physicians, hospitals, and case managers.
